Summary

Look up! From the Caldecott Medal-winning creator of the Hat Trilogy comes a new deadpan gem。

Turtle really likes standing in his favorite spot。 He likes it so much that he asks his friend Armadillo to come over and stand in it, too。 But now that Armadillo is standing in that spot, he has a bad feeling about it 。 。 。

Here comes The Rock from the Sky a hilarious meditation on the workings of friendship, fate, shared futuristic visions, and that funny feeling you get that there's something off somewhere, but you just can't put your finger on it。 Merging broad visual suspense with wry wit, celebrated picture book creator Jon Klassen gives us a wholly original comedy for the ages。

Honestly not my fave Jon Klassen!! But there were still plenty of moments to love and laugh at, and I can't get over how expressive just the characters' eyes can be! Just meh。

Classic Klassen; existentialism, dread, wit and friendship。 No one does it like him。

Maybe I am just easily amused, but this book had me giggling at the desk as I read it out-loud to myself。 The font and text DEMAND you read it outloud, giving the turtle, armadillo and snake their own unique voices as they go through their day。 I think the sunset chapter was my favorite, if only for the final line。 10/10 forced everyone I know who was standing near by to read it while I stared at them。

Love it! It feels fancy - bound as though it's a larger, more verbose book, when it's actually a sparsely-worded picture book。 I admire the artwork。 The story is told less by words and more by the (relatively quiet) actions (and inactions) of the 1, then 2, then 3, (then 4?) characters。 Love it! Jon Klassen does it AGAIN! Without a doubt, another absolute winner with this brand new book!Humour for all the family! You could see the little lights in my daughter’s eyes turn on when they realised how the author had created the story revolve around itself and how things all worked together to create the complete story。 Absolutely brilliant! This is a book that will be read, re-read and re-read again a hundred times over in our house。 Even after the first read, parts of the book were used in Jon Klassen does it AGAIN! It might be smart and droll, but it's also so completely and utterly unsatisfying *as a story* it becomes almost a vanity project, something pretty smug。 Klassen said he was inspired by Arnold Lobel。 Oh no。https://www。youtube。com/watch?v=ODy9Z。。。 It might be smart and droll, but it's also so completely and utterly unsatisfying *as a story* it becomes almost a vanity project, something pretty smug。 Klassen said he was inspired by Arnold Lobel。 Oh no。https://www。youtube。com/watch?v=ODy9Z。。。 。。。more

After Extra Yarn, I will always read anything by Jon Klassen。 This book has cool, unique illustrations, formatting, and structure, but it's a little strange。 I think anxious kids will appreciate the way it portrays social awkwardness and fear about the future。 But others might not really connect with it。 I would read this 1:1--not in storytime。 After Extra Yarn, I will always read anything by Jon Klassen。 This book has cool, unique illustrations, formatting, and structure, but it's a little strange。 I think anxious kids will appreciate the way it portrays social awkwardness and fear about the future。 But others might not really connect with it。 I would read this 1:1--not in storytime。 。。。more

It's Jon Klassen。 I don't care if he wrote and illustrated instructions on how to program the timer on my coffee maker; I'd give it 5 stars。 It's Jon Klassen。 I don't care if he wrote and illustrated instructions on how to program the timer on my coffee maker; I'd give it 5 stars。 。。。more

Another fun Jon Klassen book。 5 separate stories that weave together fate with laugh out loud characters with shifty eyes。

Delightful。 I have been waiting for ages (it seems) to read this and it was even better than I had anticipated。 Almost like a rock from the sky! Thanks, Jon。 And thank you for all the interviews you have done that give a glimpse into your process。

This book is awesome! It's subtly funny, adorable, and the illustrations are simple and great。 From a child language perspective, there are some good opportunities to work on concrete sequencing and present/future tenses。 It also lends itself to profiling the characters (especially the turtle) and talking about their social interactions。 I couldn't figure out what one of the characters was at first。。。 but now that I've actually read the description, it's an armadillo。 This book is awesome! I'm not 100% sure what I just read。。。 I will start by saying I thought the armadillo was a beaver。。。 although I honestly don't think that matters。 The turtle was cranky and stubborn, which is fun to read about, but not to deal with。 The turtle is continuously lucky, too。 Snake? Well, he's just along for the ride。 😉 I'm not 100% sure what I just read。。。 I will start by saying I thought the armadillo was a beaver。。。 although I honestly don't think that matters。 The turtle was cranky and stubborn, which is fun to read about, but not to deal with。 The turtle is continuously lucky, too。 Snake? Jon Klassen's slightly off-beat and at times a bit absurd picture books are my favorite。 He delivers his specific flavor of delightfully dry humor once again in this aptly titled story of three animals and their interactions with a rock that falls from the sky。 Jon Klassen's slightly off-beat and at times a bit absurd picture books are my favorite。 He delivers his specific flavor of delightfully dry humor once again in this aptly titled story of three animals and their interactions with a rock that falls from the sky。 。。。more

Possibly my favorite Jon Klassen book to date。 This will lend itself PERFECTLY to an outdoor storytime this summer。 I love that it can easily cue two separate readers who can interact with the text!

I spontaneously laughed hard - twice!

Another totally unique picture book by Jon Klassen about a very big rock, an armadillo, turtle, and snake。 Readers who appreciate the enigmatic will find this mesmerizing as well as thought provoking。 A great book to encourage open ended discussions。

Just the mix of whimsy, slow build pacing, and lovably goofy characters that I love in Klassen's self-illustrated and written books。 Maybe the closest I can imagine to it is if the spirit of David Lynch's Twin Peaks were captured for kids? The light hearted non-scary non-murdery parts, that is。 Hmm, that comparison really got away from me, didn't it。Anyhow, I loved it! The Rock from the Sky is a five-chapter picturebook about luck, stubbornness, imagination, obtuseness, and hurt feelings。It's a classic Klassen: simple, weird, funny, expressive, and beautiful (just look at that changing sky <3):1。 THE ROCK2。 THE FALL3。 THE FUTURE4。 THE SUNSET5。 NO MORE ROOMHowever, I wasn't a huge fan of the chapter about imagining the future。 The Rock from the Sky is a five-chapter picturebook about luck, stubbornness, imagination, obtuseness, and hurt feelings。It's a classic Klassen: simple, weird, funny, expressive, and beautiful (just look at that changing sky <3):1。 THE ROCK2。 THE FALL3。 THE FUTURE4。 THE SUNSET5。 NO MORE ROOMHowever, I wasn't a huge fan of the chapter about imagining the future。 。。。more

I was able to listen to children's author Mac Barnett read this book on his Instagram stories。 A few close calls for a curmudgeon turtle and his an uncertain future。 I was able to listen to children's author Mac Barnett read this book on his Instagram stories。 A few close calls for a curmudgeon turtle and his an uncertain future。 。。。more

Cosmic absurdity combined with existentialist humour。 Waiting for Godotesque。

I laughed out loud while reading it more than once but I'm not sure if kids will get it or think it is as funny as the hat books。 Still fun。 Recommended!
